Howard Coale is president, strategist and lead designer at Heliotrope.

2011 to 2019
Howard was a Group Creative Director at Publicis Sapient, as well as North American Practice Lead for Data Visualization at Sapient Global Markets. He focused on user experience strategy and design, design thinking, service design and data visualization, while overseeing major engagements for Goldman Sachs, Credit Suisse, JPMorgan Chase, Pfizer, Macquarie, Microsoft, Merck, Fannie Mae, Barclays, the Museum of Modern Art, the Hermitage Museum, and others.

2005 to 2011
Founder and president of Tacitus, a company focused on designing and developing 3D bio-pathway visualization tools, and remote data analysis/collaboration software for genomic research. The software, called BRAC, employed video game technology and immersive 3D to create visualization/analysis and collaboration for complex biological pathway analysis in cancer research. It would best be described as “XBox for scientists”. With a team of game developers, 3D designers and postdocs in biology, as well as prominent scientists and researchers in genetic and medical research from across the country, Tacitus developed a completely new approach to analyzing complex protein-gene interaction data. As a result of his work with Tacitus, Howard served on two panels for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) guiding grant decisions for data visualization as applied to cancer research. .
